Viterbo is to the north of Rome and is capital of the Viterbo province in the Lazio Region that extends south almost to Rome. It has a typical Mediterranean climate, with the highest rainfall in the fall and winter months.


Viterbo is the largest city in northern Lazio. Its defensive city walls, still standing, were built in the 8th century by King Desiderio of the Lombards, who built them to keep out the forces of Pope Hadrian I.
The top visitor attractions include the Palace of the Popes, Palazzo Papale, and the Lion Fountain in the Piazza delle Erbe. The city's undeground can be viewed on a tour (see below for tickets and information).
The castle, Rocca Albernoz is just inside the Porta Fiorentina city gate. It's now the city's Etruscan Museum. If you enjoy parks, the Prato Giardino is just outside this gate.
Outside Viterbo you can visit the Villa Lante and its gardens in the village of Bagnaia.
To the west of the city you'll find a volcanic are with an abundance of hot springs having therapeutic properties having been exploited by the Romans through to modern times. Pope Nicholas V, had a villa built here in 1450.
