Italian Schools and Berlusconi's Plan

Silvio Berlusconi’s Americanization of the Italian peninsula has a few people up in arms. Soon Italians will be paying for basic health care so the government can spend money on lesser pursuits. But his planned cutting of school hours and 50,000 teachers has led to quite a bit of protest—mostly by parents and educators whose jobs are in question.

Burlusconi’s plan returns to the school hours of three decades ago. Students will attend school from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Basta.

Parents are furious. The average wage for Italians is said to be €1200 per month. Families wanting to eat must earn two wages, so that could mean a whole bunch of Latchkey Kids; day care is very expensive in Italy.

The protests at the University level seem to focus on the great educations going to waste in Italy, where there are few jobs available.
