In America, we are always seeing religious figures in food. Good, sober folks often find the face of Jesus embedded in a piece of lemon meringue pie that’s set too long in the window, or in the mold pattern on a slice of Wonder Bread.
It’s different in Naples. There, religious foods are often intentionally produced. Carmine Stendardo, owner of the ‘Ciro a Santa Brigida’ pizzaria ristorante in Naples has concocted a pizza in the Vatican colors using sweet corn and mozzarella on a tomato sauce to celebrate the Pope’s visit this weekend, according to ANSA
Corn, a tribute to the new world. Maybe they put it in there wanting to make Americans feel at home, hoping they’ll still come across the pond even as the Euro strengthens against the dollar. Even Prodi is worried over it.
Me, too.
