Men living in the northwestern Italian town of Varallo will receive 50 euros ($70) for losing 4 kg (9 pounds) in a month, Mayor Gianluca Buonanno said. Women will get the same amount for shedding 3 kg (7 pounds).
If they can keep the weight off for 5 months, they will get another 200 euros ($280), he told Reuters. ~ Italian town to pay residents to shed flab
It’s true, as they drink more sickening sweet drinks like Coke and eat more junk foods, Italians are getting visibly more flabby year after year. I really noticed it this year.
The story caught my attention for several reasons. One is the oddness of payment to loose weight coming from a community. But the other thing is: I had never heard of Varallo.
Varallo Sesia, as it’s called, is in Piemonte, 150 meters below the Sacro Monte di Varallo, one of the UNESCO favored Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy.
The mountain evidently contains many chapels and a section of “city” made to feel like Jerusalem. The whole idea is to tell the more famous of the biblical stories without words. Verallo and its sacred mountain are pilgrimage destinations along the Via Francigena.
Silly things and serious things. How often they appear together to compliment each other, eh? You could spend a lifetime exploring the towns and art along the Via Francigena.
Or you can eat junk food and bloat up until someone offers you money to stop.
