Culinaria - Great Books on Regional Cuisine

Culinaria booksOk, I just wanted to alert you to my new favorite books on the regional cooking of just about everywhere, the Culinaria Series. Old but still vital.

They’re published in Germany but have decent translations into English. They’re big and heavy. The paper is pretty sturdy and the books are extremely rich with compelling visuals, photographs and maps mostly. There are recipes for sure, but the books are really about how the various regional specialties came to be, and how they’re treated in the countries of origin. They’re not about crap industrial food, they’re about the real cuisine that comes from concerned farmers, vintners, brewers, chefs and home cooks. They are culinary journeys that make me glad that corporate farms have not spread their sickening pox everywhere in the world.

And right now they’re on sale at Borders for a you-gotta-be-kidding-me price of $9.99. The Borders I went to didn’t have the Italian Culinaria.

You can get them at Amazon in a pinch, but at a much higher price: Culinaria Spain, for example.

Happy culinary journeys.
